For the first time in 30 years, global extreme poverty has surged, with 70 million people falling into extreme poverty in 2020 due to COVID-19. According to the World Bank’s 2022 report, “Poverty and Shared Prosperity,” 719 million people now live on less than $2.15 a day. Sub-Saharan Africa, conflict zones, and rural areas are the hardest hit.

Despite global efforts to end poverty by 2030, only 15% of the UN’s Global Goals have been met. The climate crisis and social inequality are deeply intertwined, affecting the world’s poorest the most.
